Two staff members of a Nova Scotia Liberal MLA Brendan Maguire were assaulted by a man in a constituency office on Dec. 14, say Halifax Regional Police.
Maguire took to social media saying, “This is a tipping point for me.”
He went on to say that a student working at the office was attacked and then a woman who tried helping.
“Kelly (Maguire’s assistant) got in between to protect her, then got free, and the two of them locked themselves in my office while he destroyed the rest of the office,” he said.
The social media post also shows the alleged perpetrator damaging items in the office, knocking over photos and a Christmas tree.
The MLA complained saying, “Over the years a lot has been said to me, I have been threatened and political opponents have started lies and rumors about me.”
Halifax Police say that they call around 12:10 p.m. on Dec. 14 about an assault at a government office in the 300 block of Herring Cove Road.
“A man came into the office and assaulted two people, who were known to him, caused damage to the office then left the area on foot,” said police.
“While on scene police received a second report where the man had damaged property at the Captain William Spry Community Centre at 16 Sussex Street and again left the area on foot.”
Maguire said his assistant is now taking time off as he re-evaluates how “we interact with the community.”
Police say they have identified the suspect and are trying to locate and arrest the man.
