Lexie Smart (Alterna Cremation)
WINNIPEG, Man. — A 39-year-old Winnipeg woman has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of 73-year-old Lexie Diane Smart, Winnipeg police say.
Carmen Jade Smart was arrested without incident on Oct. 7, by members of the Winnipeg Police Homicide Unit. She has been charged with second-degree murder and was detained in custody.
The charge follows an investigation that began on June 8, when North District General Patrol officers were called to a residence in the 1-99 block of Primrose Crescent just before 8 p.m. to assist in a missing person investigation.
When officers arrived, they located a deceased woman inside the residence. She was later identified as 73-year-old Lexie Diane Smart.
The Homicide Unit assumed responsibility for the investigation and continued to investigate the case until the arrest was made.
Police did not release further details about the circumstances of the death or the relationship between the two women.
