NANAIMO, B.C. — Police arrested 10 people and seized drugs, cash and weapons during a two-day enforcement project at Diana Krall Plaza in response to community complaints about open drug use and social disorder.
The Nanaimo RCMP Bike Unit and the Specialized Enforcement Team conducted surveillance and enforcement operations in and around the plaza on July 29 and July 30. The initiative was launched after numerous complaints from residents, business owners and stakeholders about ongoing criminal activity and disturbances in the area.
As a result of the project, officers executed four arrest warrants, seized approximately 35 grams of illicit drugs and $966 in cash. Seized weapons included a set of brass knuckles, a switchblade, a folding knife, a can of bear spray and a BB gun.
Inspector Donovan Tait, Operations Officer for the Nanaimo RCMP, said, “This operation demonstrates the RCMP’s commitment to addressing community concerns and improving public safety in Nanaimo’s downtown core. We’ve heard the concerns from residents, businesses and stakeholders about open drug use and social disorder occurring at Diana Krall Plaza. This was a targeted enforcement initiative aimed at addressing criminal activity and improving safety in the area. We remain committed to listening to our community and taking action when concerns are raised.”
Nanaimo RCMP said similar focused enforcement initiatives may continue in the future. Police remain responsive to community concerns and are committed to ensuring downtown Nanaimo is a safe place for everyone.
The RCMP also recognized the contribution of the City of Nanaimo Community Safety Officers, who provide intelligence to officers, early identification of emerging concerns and assistance in connecting vulnerable people with support services through their regular engagement with residents, businesses and the public.
