Two people have been charged with second-degree murder in the January death of Samuel Mulugeta, 34, whose body was found on a downtown Calgary sidewalk.
Jennifer Lee Caswell, 43, and Steven Morris Firingstoney, 41, were charged following a months-long investigation.
Both accused remain in custody. Caswell is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 22, 2025, and Firingstoney on Oct. 29, 2025.
Calgary Police Service initially sought three individuals in connection with the homicide. All three were located, and the investigation determined that two are believed to be directly responsible for the fatal assault.
Police were called to the 700 block of Fifth Street S.W. around 5:20 a.m. on Jan. 12, 2025, after a passerby reported an unresponsive man.
Mulugeta was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined that, prior to being found, Mulugeta had been walking along the Third Street S.W. CTrain platform at approximately 4:20 a.m
It is believed he had a brief interaction with a group of individuals, during which he was robbed and assaulted.
Public court records show both accused have previous involvement with the justice system.
