Five individuals, including two former employees, are facing multiple criminal charges following a complex two-year investigation into a massive theft and fraud ring that allegedly siphoned an estimated $2 million in merchandise from an Amazon warehouse in Ajax.
The Durham Regional Police Service’s Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) announced the charges and the recovery of hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen goods after executing two targeted search warrants in December 2025.
According to police, the investigation began in November 2025 after Amazon Loss Prevention officials contacted investigators regarding two employees at the Amazon Fulfillment Centre located at 789 Salem Road. It is alleged these employees were responsible for systematically stealing high-value merchandise from the facility over a two-year period.
The first breakthrough came on Monday, December 15, 2025. Following a joint operation with Amazon’s security team, FCU investigators arrested the two suspect employees. A subsequent search warrant at a linked residence in Scarborough led to the arrest of three additional individuals. Police seized over $250,000 worth of recovered high-end electronics and $50,000 in Canadian currency at this location.
A second search warrant was executed on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at a storage locker in Newmarket. This search yielded an additional $130,000 in stolen electronics and merchandise, bringing the total value of goods recovered in the operation to over $430,000, plus the seized cash.
The five accused, three men and two women from Newmarket and Scarborough, face a combined 14 charges including Fraud Over $5000, Theft Over $5000, and multiple counts of possession and trafficking of property obtained by crime.
The charged individuals are:
- Mehul Baldevbhai PATEL, 36, of Newmarket – charged with Fraud Over $5000 and Theft Over $5000. Following the second search, he also faces an additional charge of Possession of Stolen Property Over $5000.
- Ashishkumar SAVANI, 31, of Scarborough
- Bansari SAVANI, 28, of Scarborough
- Yash DHAMELIYA, 29, of Scarborough
- Janviben DHAMELIYA, 28, of Scarborough
All five have been released from custody on an Undertaking and are scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Police believe the stolen merchandise was being fenced for resale. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are appealing to the public for any further information.
