The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred just after midnight in the community of Manchester.
Around 12:15 a.m., officers were patrolling in the area of Deerfoot and 17 Avenue S.E., when they came across a vehicle in which a passenger pointed what the officers believed to be a handgun at them. HAWCS, the Canine Unit and other officers were brought in and a traffic stop was initiated in the 600 block of 25 Avenue S.E. One man fled from the vehicle and a confrontation occurred with officers that resulted in one member discharging their Service firearm.
The man was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition where his condition was upgraded to life-altering, but stable.
Two other occupants were taken into custody without further issue.
The area is expected to be cordoned off for some time. No CPS officers or other members of the public were injured.
As is standard practice with any officer-involved shooting, ASIRT has been called in to investigate. No further details are available at this time.
