An early morning police response unfolded in Richmond on May 7, 2025, after a 9-1-1 call from a man in distress led RCMP officers to a remote farmland area near No. 4 Road and Westminster Highway.
Richmond RCMP officers were dispatched at approximately 2:28 a.m. and, with the assistance of the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS), began tracking the man’s location in the rural southeast section of the city. Upon locating the individual, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation to ensure the safety of both the man and the surrounding community.
However, during the encounter, the man allegedly discharged an airgun erratically and stabbed a Police Service Dog (PSD) deployed at the scene. The dog sustained multiple puncture wounds and was rushed for emergency veterinary treatment. As of the latest update, the PSD remains in stable condition and is expected to recover.
Police quickly contained the area and called in the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT). After several hours of negotiation and tactical support, the suspect was safely taken into custody at 7:35 a.m.
Authorities have stated that this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Road closures in the area have since been lifted.
“Thanks to the quick response of our frontline members, LMD IPDS, and LMD IERT, this event ended with the suspect being taken into custody,
” says Chief Superintendent Dave Chauhan, Officer-in-Charge of the Richmond RCMP. “On behalf of our community we would like to thank our integrated teams and recognize the PSD and their handler for their bravery and service.
“
S/Sgt. Derek King, IPDS Unit Commander, emphasized the priority placed on the welfare of the police dogs and their handlers.
“The well-being of our dogs and handlers is of the utmost importance to us,” said King. “We will be continuing to monitor the condition of the PSD and support the handler.
“
The Richmond RCMP Serious Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation, which remains ongoing.
