On March 27, 2025, Manitoba RCMP Major Crimes (MCU) said they have charged six more inmates with second-degree murder in the homicide of another inmate Dean Tyler Young, 37, on July 22, 2024.
Inmates charged with second-degree murder are Wallace Sinclair, 20; Jeremiah Zglobicki, 22; Brennan MacDonald, 22; Keewatin Lachose, 24; Daniel Chatkana, 25; and Randal Hastings, 31.
On July 25, 2024, Nukota Peters, 22, was charged with second-degree murder in connection with Young’s death. The Correctional Service of Canada said at the time of his death, Young had been serving a sentence of eight years, 10 months and 27 days that began in May 2022, for several offences, including aggravated assault.
RCMP say that all of the seven charged in his murder have been remanded in custody and they continue to investigate.
Zglobicki was serving a life sentence for the unprovoked murder of 61-year-old Owen Pruden in August 2021. Peters was serving a four-year prison sentence for aggravated assault. Chatkana was serving an eight-year prison sentence for aggravated assault. Lachose was in prison on a robbery conviction. MacDonald was in for assault.
On July 22, 2024, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Headingley RCMP were dispatched to a report of a serious assault that occurred at Stony Mountain Institution.
Upon arrival, officers found a 37-year old male suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to Health Sciences Centre where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Members of the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit (FIS) and RCMP Major Crime Services were called to assist, and MCU took over of the investigation.
