A 26-year-old man, Ismail Karaoui, charged in connection with a homicide in Montreal last May was brought back to Canada, said Montreal Police on Nov. 26.
He was arrested in France last spring after an international manhunt involving the Montreal police’s major crimes division and French authorities. He is charged with aggravated assault and manslaughter in an assault that occurred in the parking lot of a restaurant in the Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough on May 31, 2023.
Montreal police say the incident began with a verbal dispute in the parking lot of a Décarie Blvd. restaurant. A 50-year-old man, Roger Synavongsa, was assaulted. He died in a hospital two days later.
A second suspect, 24, was arrested the day after the attack and faces similar charges.
Karaoui is back in court on Dec. 11 for a bail hearing.
