An impaired driver rammed a Morinville RCMP vehicle and assaulted a police officer.
Around 3:28 a.m. on March 6, RCMP had received a report of an impaired driver acting erratically swerving at vehicles, passing on the shoulder, and hitting a snowbank.
RCMP located the vehicle on Highway 642 and Highway 28 and initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle rammed a police car and the driver began acting erratically waving his arms about.
RCMP were able to access the vehicle as the driver attempted to drive away. Officers were assaulted by the suspect, who despite the deployment of a taser and pepper spray, was able to put his vehicle into drive and attempt to drive away.
Taking into account the danger that the suspect posed to other users of the road, officers immediately rammed the suspect vehicle bringing it to a stop. They arrested him and a found a firearm in the vehicle. RCMP Eric Steven Brown, 34, of no fixed address in Edmonton, was charged with assaulting a police officer, dangerous driving, flight from police, resisting arrest, four weapons-related offences, four counts of possession of a firearm contrary to an order, driving while prohibited, and identify theft.
Brown was brought before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for March 11 at the Alberta Court of Justice in St. Albert.
